Ubisoft has Admitted Problems with XDefiant

Ubisoft is currently facing one of the most challenging periods in its history. Issues seem to be arising from every corner. There have been delays with Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a steady decline in stock prices, and numerous cancellations or postponements of games. Now, adding to these challenges are the problems surrounding XDefiant. Initially launched as a promising Call of Duty competitor, the game quickly lost traction. Rumors began circulating that most players have abandoned the title, and the developers have limited time to turn things around. In response, Ubisoft San Francisco released a statement to counter these claims. They asserted that the game is far from dying and has the company’s full support. However, the accuracy of this statement is still up for debate. Yves Guillemot admitted in an additional interview with investors and shareholders that the game remains behind expectations.

XDefiant Developers Address the Situation

In response to these rumors, Ubisoft San Francisco issued an official statement claiming that XDefiant is not dying and is performing well, with the entire company’s backing. However, in a recent interview, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot admitted that XDefiant is falling behind expectations, suggesting that the situation may be worse than initially portrayed. The situation escalated when Guillemot, in an interview with investors, revealed that XDefiant’s poor performance contributed to Ubisoft’s financial struggles. When asked about the lowered revenue expectations for the quarter, Guillemot attributed the issue to Star Wars Outlaws’ weaker sales and XDefiant’s lackluster reception. He promised to provide more details in the upcoming financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, making the XDefiant community anxious about the game’s future.

Insider Speculation on XDefiant’s Fate

Earlier this month, Insider Gaming reported that Ubisoft San Francisco might pull content support for XDefiant if the player base doesn’t increase by the end of its third season. According to Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, XDefiant was expected to drop below 200,000 cumulative daily players, sparking concern over its sustainability. Despite efforts like reward-filled events to bring back regular players, the game’s future remains uncertain. The ongoing troubles have led to speculation about a new strategy involving XDefiant launching on Steam. Such a move might boost the player base by leveraging the massive community on the platform and removing the necessity to join through Ubisoft Connect. This change could be pivotal, but only time will tell if it’s enough to save the game.

Sony has Unveiled Its PlayStation Plus Offer for October

As part of the latest State of Play presentation, Sony unveiled its upcoming PlayStation Plus Essential subscription tier offer, which will be available to subscribers in October. Of course, this information could have easily been lost amongst the other announcements and trailers, but let’s recap it here for clarity. October will undoubtedly offer a diverse lineup thanks to three vastly different titles. Again, we’re in for some sports horror or a game that deceives the body.

October PlayStation Plus Essential Games: A Diverse Lineup

The first title in October’s lineup is the still relative newcomer WWE 2K24, this year’s installment in the wrestling sports series from Visual Concepts and 2K, which releases on March 8, 2024. The game is available in both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions. Next up is last year’s remake of Dead Space, which saw developers from EA Motive studio take the reins and gift PlayStation 5 gamers with a very successful and, in a good way, terrifying reworking of the original 2008 game. In contrast, the latest game is already a bit of a trip into the past, as it’s 2021’s Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!, a revamp of the original 2017 free-to-play game with new content. If you’re unfamiliar with the game, though, it probably wouldn’t be appropriate to say more about this visual novel except that everything is not what it seems. This game is also available in both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions.

PlayStation Plus October Availability and Last Chance for September Games

The October offering will be available from Tuesday, October 1, through Monday, November 4, 2024. Until September 30, subscribers still have the option to add September’s games to their library, which are Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, MLB The Show 24, and Little Nightmares II.

Rumors of a potential Horizon Zero Dawn remaster first surfaced in 2022, but it wasn’t until last week that several news sites took notice of the ESRB’s rating for the remaster on PS5 and PC. Now, there’s finally been official confirmation. That’s because Sony, Guerrilla, and Nixxes announced the remaster during September’s State of Play 2024 and briefly outlined what’s new in the remastered 2017 game. Among the new features is 10 hours of re-recorded motion capture for dialogue, which puts the original Horizon Zero Dawn on par with the sequel Horizon Forbidden West.

Graphics and Technical Upgrades

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will, of course, also boast improved graphics. Mark Cerny appeared after the PS5 Pro announcement with a preview of all sorts of games, but Horizon Zero Dawn didn’t appear. However, it does have native PS5 Pro support, which means better framerate and support for higher resolutions. Sony hasn’t said what to expect in the base PS5 version, though it will include things like Tempest Audio support that weren’t possible on the PS4. The PC version will include a PlayStation overlay with trophy support and has its own feature set, such as ultra-wide resolution support.

Pricing and Release Date

For existing owners of the original game, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is cheaper. For $10, you can get a better version on PlayStation 5 and PC (Steam or Epic Game Store). This also applies to fans who added the game to their library during the PlayStation Play At Home event. For others, a $50 price tag awaits. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered was released on October 31 this year.

Stellarblade LLC is Suing the Creators of Stellar Blade Videogame and Sony

The creators of Stellar Blade and Sony need to prepare for a lawsuit. The film and production company Stellarblade LLC is suing them. The company claims that due to the popularity of PlayStation 5 exclusives, customers are having trouble finding its company online. The problem began in 2022 when Project Eve was renamed Stellar Blade. Registration of the trademark related to the video game didn’t occur until January 2023. Griffith Chambers Mehaffe, who founded Stellarblade LLC, relies on the lawsuit that he bought the Internet domain stellarblade.com.

In 2006 and started his multimedia entertainment business a few years later, focusing on everything from movies to documentaries to commercials to music videos. But he forgot that he didn’t register the trademark for Stellarblade LLC until June 2023, six months after Project Eve had already been renamed StellarBlade and the South Korean studio had registered its trademark.

Could the Stellar Blade Game Face a Forced Name Change and Destruction of All Materials?

The lawsuit also points to the “confusing similarity” of the colors used in the company’s and the game’s logos and the fact that both logos begin with a stylized letter “S.” The plaintiff seeks not only the renaming of the game but also the surrender of all materials related to the StellarBlade name for destruction and the payment of damages and court costs. Griffith Chambers Mehaffe wanted to settle everything out of court, sending a cease and desist notice to Shift Up and Sony last July. Neither party replied, so he took the matter to court.

Sony’s Focus on PlayStation 5 Pro Amid Next-Gen Plans

Sony’s marketing campaign is now focusing on the PlayStation 5 Pro. But behind the scenes, preparations are underway for the next generation console. The PlayStation 6 is set to be sold in two different models. That’s according to leaker Kepler, who can’t say what Sony will use the two different SoCs (integrated circuit with processor and graphics chip) for. One possibility is two differently priced models, along the lines of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. The other is a standard home console, complemented by a handheld or a hybrid console like the highly successful Nintendo Switch. Only time will tell.

The Future of Handheld Gaming and Market Competition

A handheld would make sense, though. Sony has verified the interest of gamers through the PlayStation Portal. Plus, Microsoft has been planning one for a long time. A competitor is taking a more diversified approach. It wants gamers to be able to play wherever they want. And that’s where a portable device fits in. So Xbox may roll out a new generation in two years, including a traditional console and a Steam Deck-style handheld. Or perhaps there will be three?

Upcoming Milestones: Xbox’s 25th Anniversary and New Generations

November 15, 2026, will mark 25 years since the first Xbox was released. Rumor has it that Microsoft won’t miss this opportunity and will release a new console generation, having resigned to a cross-generational piece. After all, representatives of the American company have previously confirmed the preparation of a successor. If Xbox will indeed offer a new generation of consoles in 2026, experts are curious to see what Sony will do. After all, the latter is releasing the PS5 Pro this year and wants the PS6 in 2028. Will two years leave Microsoft a free field?
