The Successor to the Legendary Minecraft is Coming

Markus “Notch” Persson, creator of the legendary Minecraft, may be making a big comeback. On social network X, he has sparked a discussion among fans about his next project, which he describes as the “spiritual successor” to his most famous creation. Notch held a poll asking his followers whether they would rather see a Minecraft sequel or a traditional roguelike. The result was unequivocal – nearly 80% of voters supported the idea of a second Minecraft. The response got Notch thinking about returning to game development, but without any connection to the current direction of the brand under Microsoft.

“Maybe people really want me to create something similar to the original Minecraft,” Notch wrote, adding that he would like to create the game with direct help from the community, such as through early access. But at the same time, he admits concerns that spiritual successors often fail to live up to expectations. Minecraft, which sold to Microsoft for $2.5 billion in 2014, became the best-selling game in history and changed the video game industry. However, Notch suggested that he doesn’t always agree with the brand’s current direction, “I don’t want to disrupt the work of Mojang, but sometimes I feel like Microsoft has made some parts of the game worse.”

It’s this frustration that seems to have contributed to his decision to create a game that delivers an experience similar to the original Minecraft, but with new ideas and a fresh vision. While details of the game are not yet known, Notch has hinted that it will stay true to the first-person sandbox world style. Fans are already speculating about a possible cyberpunk or fantasy setting. Notch’s community involvement in development promises that the game will reflect the wishes of players and offer something unique. Notch’s interest in returning to game development is great news for Minecraft fans. Only time will tell if his new project will actually succeed.

Suicide Squad’s Last Song?

Sony will kick off 2025 in style. PS Plus subscribers can start looking forward to the new additions to the January line-up of free games. Of particular note is Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (PS4, PS5), last year’s release from Rocksteady. It’s no secret that the game failed to live up to the enormous expectations. Moreover, the developers recently revealed that they are not planning any more content.

Need for Speed and The Stanley Parable

Therefore, the PS Plus launch is on the cards, with Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered (PS4) and The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe (PS4, PS5) also for free. You can pick up these games on Plus on January 7.

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is basically a bigger, prettier version of that weird, mind-bending game from 2013 where you, as Stanley, wander around your empty office looking for clues. But it’s not really about finding clues; it’s more about… the game messing with your head. You make choices, but do you really? It’s a whole thing. The narrator is hilarious, by the way. Plus, this new version has even more stuff to discover, it is just more accessible, and it looks nicer. The narrator is still there, and he is terrific.

The new Palworld content update, a survival title that unexpectedly reached millions of players at once at the beginning of the year, has attracted many gaming enthusiasts again after months of stagnation. The Japanese survival has once again become one of the most-played games on Steam. With the game’s availability on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One, however, the resulting number of simultaneous players will be higher.

While this is a small fraction compared to the interest that peaked during the game’s January release, it is nevertheless evident that the game still enjoys the support of hundreds of thousands of players worldwide. The new update, titled Feybreak, was released just before the Christmas holidays and brought a new island, monster fortresses, bosses, raids and many other tweaks and improvements. The unconventional survival game Palworld is available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. You can also get into the game through the Xbox Game Pass subscription service.

One of the games that gamers were looking forward to in 2024 but didn’t get to see has been a remake of the dark fantasy first Gothic. However, it must be said that its release last year was only anticipated, as no specific date has been officially set, although a collector’s edition of the game was previously announced.

While the New Year’s card from the developers doesn’t include a release date, it does at least include the assurance that 2025 will be a pivotal year for the Gothic 1 Remake “Happy New Year!” the developers wished on social media or in an announcement on Steam, before mentioning the importance of this year, adding that player support means a lot to them. Together, let’s bring Valley of Mines back to life! Thank you for your passion, feedback, and commitment. Let’s make this a journey to remember!” write the developers.

Gothic Game on X.com

In this post, the developers don’t outright commit to a release this year, but more specific was the game’s community manager Timur Khodyrev, who goes by the moniker T-Moor on social media and Steam. “We never informed people about the release in 2024. The game will be released in 2025,” Khodyrev responded to one of the comments below the news, which blamed the developers for the lack of a release date and missing the year 2024. So hopefully the developers will go out of their way to finally let us see more news, but also a release date. In any case, Gothic 1 Remake is headed to PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. However, we’ll have to wait for more detailed information.

Gothic Remake will throw us into the Valley of Mines, a penal colony shrouded in mystery and danger. Explore a vast, open world filled with rugged terrain, dangerous creatures, and complex characters. Forge your own destiny as you navigate the intricate factions and power struggles within the colony’s walls. Engage in visceral combat, master powerful spells, and uncover hidden secrets beneath the surface. With its immersive atmosphere, challenging gameplay, and rich lore, Gothic 1 Remake promises a thrilling RPG experience, so lets see how this will work out soon.

State of Decay 3 – Potential Release in 2026

Fans of the State of Decay franchise will probably have to wait for the third installment. According to new speculation, the survival action from Undead Labs has been pushed back to 2026, despite initial speculation of a 2025 release. The information was revealed by journalist Jez Corden on the Xbox Two podcast, where he stated that although the release was originally set for next year, it may be delayed, mainly due to the large number of titles that Microsoft may release in 2025. The possible delay is also highlighted by the fact that we haven’t seen any gameplay footage yet – only a trailer from this June, which showed footage of the engine but didn’t provide any more details on gameplay.

Microsoft has big titles like Avowed, DOOM: The Dark Ages, Fable and The Outer Worlds 2 lined up for 2025, so delaying State of Decay 3 to the following year would make sense and allow the developers to fine-tune the details and give the game some well-deserved space.
