Markus “Notch” Persson, creator of the legendary Minecraft, may be making a big comeback. On social network X, he has sparked a discussion among fans about his next project, which he describes as the “spiritual successor” to his most famous creation. Notch held a poll asking his followers whether they would rather see a Minecraft sequel or a traditional roguelike. The result was unequivocal – nearly 80% of voters supported the idea of a second Minecraft. The response got Notch thinking about returning to game development, but without any connection to the current direction of the brand under Microsoft.

“Maybe people really want me to create something similar to the original Minecraft,” Notch wrote, adding that he would like to create the game with direct help from the community, such as through early access. But at the same time, he admits concerns that spiritual successors often fail to live up to expectations. Minecraft, which sold to Microsoft for $2.5 billion in 2014, became the best-selling game in history and changed the video game industry. However, Notch suggested that he doesn’t always agree with the brand’s current direction, “I don’t want to disrupt the work of Mojang, but sometimes I feel like Microsoft has made some parts of the game worse.”

It’s this frustration that seems to have contributed to his decision to create a game that delivers an experience similar to the original Minecraft, but with new ideas and a fresh vision. While details of the game are not yet known, Notch has hinted that it will stay true to the first-person sandbox world style. Fans are already speculating about a possible cyberpunk or fantasy setting. Notch’s community involvement in development promises that the game will reflect the wishes of players and offer something unique. Notch’s interest in returning to game development is great news for Minecraft fans. Only time will tell if his new project will actually succeed.
