Feedback on Player’s Criticized Humor of Borderland 3
One of the things that players weren’t too keen on in Borderlands 3 was the humor. Many found it lacking the wit of Borderlands 2 or outright unfunny, childish, or awkward. The sequel, Borderlands 4, has already presented relatively dark trailers. The typical playful art stylization hasn’t gone anywhere, but the overall tone suggests a significant shift in humor from the previous game. Narrative director Sam Winkler from Gearbox, who previously worked on Borderlands 3 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, responded to fans by saying they’ve eased up on the toilet humor this time around, signaling an intriguing change in the game’s humor.
Winkler shared on Twitter that Borderlands 4 is their most ambitious game yet. He praised the talented and funny writers involved, many of whom shared their enthusiasm online. However, players quickly used this as an opportunity to ask for more information about the game. User Alvaro Iturralde’s question gained significant attention as he pointed out the darker atmosphere and asked if players can expect black humor instead of various fart jokes. Winkler responded that while he couldn’t reveal much about the content of Borderlands 4, he still stands by his critique of the overuse of toilet humor in Borderlands 3. This reply has already pleased some fans.
Winkler’s reply to another question further clarified their direction. The question jokingly included words like “poop poop farty 4000” and “skibidi toilet.” Winkler replied, “I’m not going to say there are no toilets, but if the word ‘skibidi’ gets in there under my watch, I’m going to cry serious tears. Paul Tassi joked that we would have a Hawk 2A weapon, and a developer asked me if that was true. I wanted to put my hand in the shredder.” The developers’ stance on refining the humor is clear.
The Uncertain Fate of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2
Since Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands has been mentioned, it’s worth touching on its unclear sequel status. Speculations about the development of Borderlands 4 hinted that Wonderlands 2 might have been delayed indefinitely or outright canceled. This was further suggested by various mentions online regarding layoffs at Lost Boys Interactive—the studio that worked on the game—and potential issues stemming from the acquisition of Gearbox by Take-Two Interactive. While Borderlands 4 moves forward with momentum, Wonderlands 2 remains in limbo, leaving fans of the spin-off uncertain about its future.
