Insider Reports on Far Cry Delays

Insider Tom Henderson(Insider Gaming) has reported on the behind-the-scenes happenings of the Far Cry franchise several times over the past year. His sources at Ubisoft were supposed to bring details not only about Far Cry 7, but also about the extraction spin-off being developed under the codename Maverick, but no further information has come out this year.

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

At the very end of the year, however, Tom Henderson did speak up, and fans will not be happy to hear his first news—both games were internally supposed to be delayed until 2026. However, Henderson immediately adds that this is mainly due to the effort to change a concept that has been repeated for years, which also goes hand in hand with the transition from the Dunia engine to Snowdrop.

Far Cry Maverick: Extraction in Alaska

In a new article, the well-known insider first recaps what he has already written about the upcoming games. Far Cry Maverick is supposed to be an extractive affair set in Alaska. Players are supposed to fight not only against other players, but also against animals and especially inhospitable conditions. It’s unknown at this time for what purpose or with the sight of what loot they’ll be venturing into the wilderness, but that in itself sounds a lot different than what we’re used to within Far Cry.

Project Blackbird: A Timed Mainline Sequel

Even the mainline sequel, which is being developed as Project Blackbird, is set to be different, especially with its emphasis on the timer that is set to run relentlessly as you play. According to Tom Henderson, players are supposed to have 24 real hours, or 72 hours in the game, to complete the main quest, which involves rescuing a family kidnapped by members of a violent cult.

Gameplay Innovations in Both Titles

In addition, the developers are to focus on changes in movement, for example, with players having the option to tactically sprint, slide or overcome obstacles. This is also supposedly due to the fact that both games are said to have an identical core and are very similar in basic ways. This is said to include, for example, the same inventory handling or loot system, but naturally that will have more weight in Project Maverick.

Concerns and Challenges Ahead

Henderson concludes his report by adding that there may be some concerns around Maverick in particular, however, and developers should have more work to do with it at the moment. If only because Ubisoft has had a multiplayer game from this world in the works for about a decade now, and mainly because not all such titles have gone well on the French company’s side lately. The latest example is XDefiant, which has entered its final season and will end next year due to lack of interest. On the other hand, Far Cry is an established brand and that could be a factor that may be more of a deciding factor.
