Star Wars Outlaws

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

The galaxy may be far, but Star Wars Outlaws is not. As the latest game in Ubisoft’s open-world franchise, Outlaws is coming out this week on a staggered schedule: an Early Access release date followed by a fixed release date. It will also be released at different times for different platforms. If you want to play Star Wars Outlaws early, you’ll need to purchase the Gold or Ultimate Edition of the game. Both versions will allow you to launch Outlaws on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X up to three days before the regular edition releases on August 30.

Early Access Details: Catching a Head Start

At this time, Star Wars Outlaws is releasing in Early Access. The following image will show you when you can play them in your time zone on the platform of your choice. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, Star Wars Outlaws goes into Early Access on Tuesday, August 27, at noon local time. That includes North America, where, unlike many other East Coast-leaning releases, it will be out at midnight local time across the continent. On Windows PCs, the game has a more erratic launch schedule and comes out at different times in different time zones. The image below shows the exact times in various regions around the world.

Entering the World of Outlaws: What to Expect

Star Wars Outlaws largely features a mix of stealth missions, third-person shooting, and longer platforming segments, a formula clearly inspired by the Uncharted series. Outlaws is also known for being a fully open world, but to what extent the game is a classic “Ubisoft Map” remains to be seen.

Awaiting the Full Experience: The Review and Beyond

Chinese studio Game Science is celebrating the phenomenal success of its first major game, Black Myth: Wukong. Until now, we only knew that the action RPG was in high demand on Steam. Today, we know that the Chinese mythology-inspired adventure has also caught the attention of PlayStation 5 gamers. On PC and PS5, Black Myth: Wukong has sold more than 10 million units combined. The title reached this milestone in its first three days. In addition, it was revealed that at one point, there were more than 3 million players in the game simultaneously. These are incredible numbers for a purely single-player project.

Shattering Records and Setting New Standards

The game has had the most simultaneous players on Steam, with 2,415,714. So hundreds of thousands more are coming from the PS5. This makes Black Myth: Wukong the second-most-played game in Steam history. PUBG holds the record: Battlegrounds (3.2 million). The single-player record was previously held by Cyberpunk 2077. That reached 1,054,388 players at the time of release. It broke the million mark within 160 minutes of release. Black Myth: Wukong broke the million mark within the first hour of release.

A Grateful Studio and Optimistic Future

The developers thank players for their support and wish them enjoyable hours of playing Black Myth: Wukong. If you’re interested in a comparison in terms of sales, Cyberpunk 2077 reported 13 million in its first 12 days. In conclusion, Black Myth: Wukong will also be released on Xbox Series X/S. The delay is due to further optimization. The developers need to helpimize the game for the weaker Series S.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle – PlayStation 5 Release Controversy

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

The announcement of the PlayStation 5 version of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle ahead of its release on Xbox Series X/S and PC has sparked a wave of opposing opinions and excitement from the Sony fan camp. They are looking forward to the next game from Microsoft, while green console fans are writing about the Xbox becoming useless.

Phil Spencer’s Vision for Xbox’s Future

As head of Microsoft’s gaming division, Phil Spencer is the one to praise gamer interest in the Xbox brand in a new Gamescom interview with the official Xbox channel, revealing that the number of gamers on consoles is growing and the franchises are stronger than ever. He also talks about the changes in the gaming industry. Some traditional ways of making and distributing games are changing. He says that at the end of these changes, the result needs to be better games that more people worldwide can play.

Learning from Past Releases

Regarding confirming the PS5 version of the action-adventure game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Spencer recalled his statement when they announced four games for other platforms. At the time, he said he would evaluate the impact of that decision and learn lessons. As we’ve heard from others and seen in the best-selling games charts, the biggest interest has been in Studio Rare’s pirate adventure Sea of Thieves, which arrived on PS5 in April this year.

A High Bar Set by Microsoft

“So I look at it this way: how can we make our games as strong as possible, make sure that our platform continues to grow across consoles, PC and cloud, and I think that’s just a strategy that works for us,” Spencer says. He makes no secret that he’s simply running the company, and the bar is set very high when it comes to Xbox. By that, he means CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood expect a lot from Xbox.

The $75 Billion Power Play

“Inside Microsoft, the bar is set high regarding what we must give back to the company. We’re getting support [from Microsoft] that is just amazing in terms of what it allows us to do,” he said. He was surely alluding to Activision’s $75.4 billion funding of its acquisition of Blizzard King. It is by far the largest acquisition in the video game industry’s history. Xbox joined the company behind Call of Duty, Diablo, World of Warcraft, and mobile hit Candy Crush Saga.

Expanding Horizons: Xbox Titles on Rival Consoles

Recall that Microsoft has released Sea of Thieves (PS5), Hi-Fi Rush (PS5), Pentiment (PS5, PS4, and Switch), and Grounded (PS5, PS4, and Switch) on competing consoles. Next will be the Indiana Jones title during Spring 2025. It’s also worth mentioning the earlier rumors that more and more Xbox games will be coming out on other consoles, as Satya Nadella and Amy Hood want a quicker return on their big investment. Allegedly, no franchise is protected, not even Halo and Forza, which are intrinsically linked to Xbox.

Black Myth: Wukong – An Action Feast Through Chinese Mythology

Title: Black Myth: Wukong
Type of Game: Action RPG (Souls-like)
Developer: Game Science
Publisher: Game Science
Released: 2024
Platforms Available: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC
Platform Reviewed: PlayStation 5
Level of Maturity: Mature (17+)

Black Myth: Wukong follows a silent, anthropomorphic monkey looking to follow in Sun Wukong’s footsteps, gathering the five relics he left behind so you can complete your reincarnation. Based on the novel Journey to the West, Black Myth takes creative liberties to explore what might happen if a monkey, the Destined One, wanted to become the legendary Monkey King. However, the main plot becomes unclear early on, as the story mainly focuses on the quirky characters in each self-contained chapter.

Quirky Characters and Their Oddball Tales

You, the Destined One, will meet all sorts of odd characters who wish to aid you along the way and help themselves. A reciprocal back-scratching tale of altruism. Those are the overarching plots within each chapter, but you may meet various other characters with their challenges and wishes. These NPC-driven narratives won’t blow anyone away, but the novelty of the tales and influential personalities will surely delight.

Souls-like Redefined: A Balanced Challenge

This is Souls-like, meaning it’s an action RPG with challenging bosses, experience gained, stats and skill trees, and shrines littered about to serve as checkpoints should you fall in battle. Now, how Black Myth departs from the formula is that while bosses can be difficult, I beat most of them after several attempts.

Black Myth: Wukong – Black Wind King Boss Fight (PS5)

It wasn’t easy—for some of them, I was down to my last healing item and out of mana—but I did away with it surprisingly briskly for others. Another departure is the regular enemies along the path, almost always fodder. Though these fights are trivial, they’re not unwelcome; they keep the route from point A to B active and add to the world in terms of hostility and visuals.

Mastering Combat: Skills, Spells, and Strategy

Wukong uses one weapon, which helps make a reasonably diverse skill tree balanced around gameplay. However, weapon skills, such as changing Wukong’s stance for different combat abilities, are only one tree. Players can enhance the few spells available, transformations, and core combat abilities, such as strengthening varied combos, jump attacks, and light attacks. This sounds like a lot, but most of it is only available after the start. Chapter one serves almost as a tutorial, though a meaty one, and introduces gameplay elements at an excellent pace.

Environmental Details and the Frustration of Invisible Walls

For the most part, Black Myth is a linear game with several diverging paths, be they hills, drops, or turns. Maybe a wall you encountered earlier is gone now. The problem here is the ample use of invisible walls. Now, to present this breathtaking world as beautiful and open as GameScience has, I understand the need to use invisible walls.

That said, sections that appear traversable but aren’t may appear later on and be traversable because a treasure chest lies in the distance. A simple example is a rock that’s about waist high: can’t cross it! Is the same sort of obstacle later? Totally can. The inconsistency hurts the experience and adds a touch of frustration for completionists who want to check every corner for hidden goodies. With all this said, I’m still figuring out the answer because putting in actual walls everywhere the developers don’t want players to go would hurt the visuals. Some studious designers may have the answer.

Immersive Visuals, Misaligned Voices

Speaking of visuals, Black Myth exhausts every opportunity to add detail, whether gazing into the mountains far off a cliff or squinting at the stonework of a wall carved with hundreds of Buddhas. Immersive environments are core to the experience; anyone with a taste for Asian history, philosophy, or environments will love this marvel. Areas in which players have no business looking have detail. Some odd ravines had little statues lying about if you look closely enough, while other carvings have believable moss growing on them or show the wear of time.

Unfortunately, Black Myth‘s voice actors in English sometimes don’t fit the script, as the game is originally spoken in Chinese. Few characters come off as grounded and well-adjusted; most are erratically excitable, overly confident in the most dire situations, or seem immeasurably anxious at all times. I love them all. The music blends into the background, but in critical moments, the Chinese instrumentation—gongs, liquid, and the like—either accentuates the bombastic of ridiculous situations or heightens the intense battle ahead.

Conclusion

I would be gushing if I were writing this before the final chapter. The finale should not negate the majority of the game, but to cast it aside would be disingenuous. Without a doubt, I had a blast throughout Black Myth. If you have the slightest interest in Journey to the West, Asian philosophy, or want to broaden your horizons, then this is an easy recommendation. Aside from being an exceptional, accessible game to play, the references to works you may not be familiar with will instill an appetite to learn more. I know it has in me. All of this comes from a studio I had never heard of before (GameScience), though I hope it finds excellent success after its effort here. I can’t wait to see the next project and see if this is an example of what they can achieve.
