Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

The TV series adaptation of the popular game series Like A Dragon or Yakuza – with the show’s title straight up combining the two, made its premiere on October 24. The first half of the first season, which will total six episodes, is now available on Amazon’s Prime Video service. For now, viewers can expect the first three episodes here, which play out the story of Kiryu and his friends across both timelines. The remaining three episodes will arrive exactly one week later, on Thursday, October 31.

With the launch of the series, the reviews have also been coming in, but so far Yakuza doesn’t seem to be experiencing the kind of success that this year’s Fallout has also managed to garner. Viewers and fans, who have only had the chance to see the first part of the series so far, are often divided in their assessments. While some appreciate the different approach compared to the game, others describe it as a disappointment as they miss the humour or some of the plot points. Overall, however, the ratings so far on IMDB are hovering around 7.8. However, reviewers, both game and movie, are also divided in their assessment based on all the episodes already filmed. IGN, for example, gave the series a 4/10 rating, calling it a below-average adaptation of the franchise, while in contrast DiscussingFilm, with a 3.5/5 rating, praises the boldly minted journey instead of a mere replication; similarly, Rolling Stones magazine talks about another bold and worthy game adaptation. NME magazine, on the other hand, was a little harsher, calling it another disappointment. Going back to the gaming media, the series was liked by Eurogamer or GamesRadar.

However, if you’re intrigued by the series, it’s best to make up your own mind anyway, with a total of six episodes of around 45 minutes making for a sympathetic length and running time. Of course, ratings from gamers and viewers may yet change with the release of the remaining episodes, but it doesn’t look like another unquestionable Amazon hit, which doesn’t rule out other possible plans and reviews.
