Race To GOTY 2016: DOOM

687

The Race To GOTY series is exactly what it says on the tin. There will be new entries, overtakes, disqualifications, and of course uncompromising wheel-to-wheel to go along with it. Game of the year title is the prize.

Having become disillusioned with the disgusting industry practices, hype, lies, publisher and journo gymnastics, I wave PC-bound triple-A a definitive goodbye. Pretty much all of the ‘hotly anticipated’ triple-A onslaught splattered its face on a wall. 2016, for me, represents that wall. But I did say ‘pretty much all’ for a reason.

Oh HELL yeah.

Following a rather underwhelming multiplayer beta and announcement of aggressive anti-consumer policy by its publisher, Doom, it seemed, was doomed. But the furnace’s door, drammatically closing above what was to carry the legacy of an immortal classic, came to a grinding halt. And then, as they were blasted wide open in telling slow-mo, all Hell broke loose.

Bring it.

Compared to literally any first person shooter’s solo campaign in existence, 2016’s Doom stands alone. It’s the very essence, the soul and heart of gameplay as we know it, a crazy rollercoaster taking one through each and every why we play video games. The pace, the difficulty, the challenge, the balance, the wordless harmony between the player and character…

You know what, fuck this. Imma play me some Doom now. In the gist, it is, as one of the last two triple A’s probably ever, running for our Game of the Year. Stand by.

Wait… oh no, everything where it should be, continue.
