In this WeekEndGame, we have taken Rebel Galaxy‘s Dravius spacecraft for a relaxing spin, and taken the two-map Crash Course campaign in Left 4 Dead 2 by storm.
Manic Miner, In Space
The two-men-developed space ‘sim’ Rebel Galaxy was among the most pleasant surprises of this summer’s Steam sale. That’s at a point in time when I’ve been pretty much convinced neither the genre nor the discounted swag could ever surprise me again. Good job!
Because of Rebel Galaxy‘s beautifully snappy nature, rather than looking at separate activities or missions diarisation of which doesn’t sit with me exactly right, we’ll have a look at some of its ships and what we think they do best. At nearly half a million in-game credits, the Dravius is your antree into heavy frigates. Here’s what’s what.
Here she is. The Dravius. I love how berserk-but-not-too-much did Double Damage go with the ship design.
I must be honest, me owning one of these wasn't exactly part of the grand plan. I was going for the 7 broadside-ported, but twice as expensive, Vanguard.
I have spent about half of the many hours I've flown the Dravius for in the tranquility of mineable belts.
The striking spiky asteroid bad boys have cash written all over them. But I swear I've never found one I could punch the cash out of.
The icy beauties though, they work just fine. Pro tip; if you're out mining, always pop a Fault Scanner into the ship's component banks. The Dravius has 3, more than enough.
A full hold, 24 in the non-expanded Dravius, of Meteoric Diamonds or Gold Ignots has the magical ability to make your wallet go yaay!
When things get hot, you'll find that for a heavy frigate, the Dravius is actually pretty nimble. My long-ago captured Mk1 Korian Viridian Laser is a keeper because of its efficiency against shields and the best range of all beam weapons. I love beam weapons.
Trading paint with a Korian Exterminator flying a Minotaur destroyer. The Minotaur can be yours, too, if you're good friends with the Militia. Also have 8.5 million credits to your name.
The Dravius sure can take a beating or two...
... but you better watch out when there's a Dreadnaught around. Go broadside and the Dravius is space dust in seconds. To stand a chance, the mammoth's mammoth rear is a good place to stick to.
Quite frankly though, the Dravius just doesn't feel home in larger-scale combat. Dealing with competitor miners is about as much adrenaline as she'll ever need.
Space is beautiful. And, as I'm sure a quick peek into my cargo hold would unequivocally prove, full of treasure. So is this fantastic game, mind you.
Massacre Masterclass
What I should open this – and indeed any other – post about us co-oping Left 4 Dead 2‘s campaign is that we suck at it. The thing is, our Crash Course, err, crash course didn’t look anything like that.
My love for what I to this day consider the best co-op shooter of all time didn’t really need rejuvenating. But that’s exactly what somehow happened.
The Not-So-Fantastic Four or Who Crashed the Bloody Chopper?
An eloquent reminder or a local tourist attraction.
The Boomer in the alley signals sightseeing is probably over.
Yep, rampage time.
There are two different kinds of approach on display here. Each has its poetry to it.
The zombies don't do much tactics. They're mostly like, heeere weee aaarrrgh!
Ammo. We all like stocking up ammo.
We like putting ammo to good use also.
Now somebody pluck all that ammo from the bodies and pile it back up for the next guys.
The molotov wasn't a bad idea. The duckwalk, not so much.
Be left for dead, or only leave dead in your wake is a no-brainer choice. No-brainer for us, and no-brainer for them.
The rather tranquil truck depot veiled by falling night is where we're going. But let's not get too ahead of ourselves as...
... the path there is paved with fire,...
... with blood,...
... with death,...
... explosions and airborne limbs,...
... and stone-cold murder.
Honestly, after more than 100 hours of Left 4 Dead 2, you look back at all the senseless killing and irresponsible massacre. You look back and think, this is fucking awesome.
In the next WeekEndGame,… I’ll tell you what. I will. Promise. Keep it locked.
